Computer performance is the efficiency of a specific computer system, or how well the computer performs when all factors are involved. The amount of work completed by a computer system is referred to as its performance. ➱ Beyond processors, computer system performance requires attention to memories (such as dynamic random-access memory, storage (such as a disk), and networking).

➱ The product of operating frequency, instruction count, and instructions per cycle is one measure of single-processor performance.

➱ Performance is derived directly from faster devices and indirectly from the use of more devices in parallel.

➱ The time it takes to complete a task from start to finish is referred to as its Response time. Response time includes the time taken to transmit the inquiry, process it by the computer, and transmit the response back to the terminal. Response time is frequently used as a measure of the performance of an interactive system.

➱ Throughput is the total quantity of work done in a given amount of time. The throughput is commonly measured using bits per second (bps)—more specifically, megabits per second (Mbps) and gigabits per second (Gbps).

➱ The whole time a CPU spends computing on a given task is referred to as CPU Execution time. It also does not include time spent on I/O or running other programs. This is sometimes known as just CPU time.

➱ Latency is a phrase used to describe the state of something that is in transition. Latency is the time it takes for a packet of data to travel from source to destination. In terms of performance optimization, it’s important to optimize to reduce causes of latency and to test site performance emulating high latency to optimize for users with lousy connections.

➱ Network connections can send bits very fast. We measure that speed using the Bitrate, the number of bits of data that are sent each second.

➱ Bandwidth is like a freeway with a strictly enforced speed limit. Network Bandwidth definition can be confusing, but basically, network bandwidth is defined as the maximum transfer throughput capacity of a network. It’s a measure of how much data can be sent and received at a time. Bandwidth is measured in bits, megabits, or gigabits per second.

➱Internet Speed is determined by a combination of bandwidth and latency. Computers split messages into packets, and they are unable to send another message until the first packet is received. Even if a computer is connected to a high-bandwidth connection, the speed with which it sends and receives messages is still limited by the latency of the connection.
